Kenya built its name on washed coffee: bright, clean, and sharply fruited. This one takes the other road. Kenya Setek Highlands Natural comes from a small family farm in the Meteitei Hills of Nandi County, grown at 1,980 meters in Kenya's North Rift, and it's dried as whole cherry instead of washed, a process that's still rare in Kenya.

Leaving the fruit on the seed for three weeks of drying takes the cup somewhere Kenyan coffee rarely goes: ripe tropical fruit and dark berries up front, a wine-like sweetness through the middle,
and a heavy, syrupy body underneath. Cherries are hand-sorted for ripeness, then dried on raised beds and a sun dryer for 20 to 25 days. We roast it light-medium to keep the fruit loud and the
body intact.

Every Cup Has A Story

Setek Highlands is a family farm with about eight acres and 6,000 trees under coffee, growing three of Kenya's own cultivars: Batian, K7, and Ruiru, all of which make up this lot. The family's goal is to put Meteitei on the map as an origin in its own right, and they work toward it one harvest at a time. They watch what the land and the trees are doing, try something new, measure it, taste it, and do it better next season.
Their plans reach past the cup, to tree planting, conservation, nurseries, and giving young people in the area a reason to see a future in farming. This coffee reached us through Ubuntu Brews, our Nairobi-based origin partner, who keeps every lot traceable from farm to roaster and carries our roasting and cupping notes back to the family. It's our first direct trade coffee from Africa, and what we learn roasting it in Irvine goes straight back to the people who grew it.

BHB Notes

If you think you know Kenyan coffee, this one will surprise you. It has Kenya's fruit with a natural's weight: jammy, winey, and heavy on the tongue. Start with a pour over, then try it in a French press, where that syrupy body really shows.
